Mark Twain wrote “The secret source of humor is not joy but sorrow; there is no humor in heaven.”
Contact experiencers, while in presence of what they believe are extraterrestrials, sometimes report feeling that their whole reality is being destroyed and is replaced by something frightfully unknown. The realization that there are other intelligences operating on Earth for many induces a kind of existential terror.
I wonder if some of the ridicule that contactees and abductees often have to endure from others is more complicated than just jokers having fun at somebody else’s expense. Perhaps, those making the wise cracks on unconscious levels are profoundly worried that these strange encounters with non-human beings just might be true. I am suggesting that behind the ridicule of flying saucer witnesses and contact experiencers, there might be in some instances a kind of terrible sadness. One can describe it as ” the end of a world,” or at least a world in which flying saucers are not real.
As a practicing physician for nearly forty years, I had to regularly give patients and their families terrible news. From that experience, I learned to respect the power of the psychological defense mechanism called denial as a coping strategy.
In the UFO field, I strive to have compassion for those that clown around and make fun of experiencers. Such antics suggest to me that some of those that engage in such ridicule might subconsciously be frightened that they could be entering into a strange new world. It is a world that few of us are truly prepared for.
In my medical work, many times I have witnessed the following. When a loved one, a person whom family members strongly identify with is dying, those relatives, perhaps a husband, wife or child often act in ways suggesting that they feel like they are dying too. Their fear is quite evident. You can see it on their faces, in their body language and in their manner of speaking. The response to this terror is often anger and blame, against the doctors or anyone else that might be held responsible for the bad news.
I am suggesting that a somewhat similar mechanism perhaps applies to some that vehemently deny the reality of UFOs and their importance. Perhaps, behind those smirking faces, there is a combination of sadness and anger that manifests as ridicule.
When a cherished consensus reality is dying, those that are extremely attached to the old ways of thinking might feel like they are dying too.
About the author: Dr. Burkes volunteered as a Working Group Coordinator for the CE-5 Initiative from 1992 till 1998. He continued to study the flying saucer phenomenon with the Peruvian contact network called Rahma and more recently as a medical consultant for organization FREE (Foundation for Research into ET and Extraordinary Experiences). He is co-author of the book “Paths to Contact” edited by Jeff Becker. Preston Dennett and Dr. Burkes are co-authors of a chapter on UAP healings in FREE’s compendium “Beyond UFOs.” TheConsciousness and Contact Research Institute has published a compendium titled “A Greater Reality.” Joseph Burkes’ chapter in this book is on the human initiated encounters with UAP intelligences and the consciousness connection as well as the Virtual Experience Model that describes the illusory mechanisms of contact employed by UAP Intelligences. He is retired from the Southern California Pemanente Group after thirty years’ service in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Byron Hunter: I believe this is true. I have a family member who was an officer in the Air Force for quite some time and worked many levels underground with ICBM’s and dealt with launch codes, etc during a pretty chaotic time in our history.
He worked at Minot AFB for years and denies having any contact like experiences (which may be true). I do know that his work required above top secret clearances for obvious reasons.
This individual particularly out of those close enough to me in my family to know how interested I am in the subject would ridicule and poke fun at my interest quite often. Then there came a night where there was an opportunity for this individual to witness a sighting as it was happening. I repeatedly urged him to look at what I was seeing and he literally refused to look up, snickered, and walked inside quickly. I didn’t understand the mentality and it was very difficult for me to see how someone could think like this.
When I came inside I brought it up and even suggested that he may know on a deeper level that what I’m experiencing has legitimacy to it and it may effect him emotionally to the point where he wants to distance himself from it and put up a front to hide his true feelings. He scoffed at the notion and pretty quickly ended the conversation. It started to get to me that I thought he may know more than what he lets on and that he’s disturbed by any type of paradigm shift for him in that direction because he’s gotten so comfortable not thinking about it (and that being his reasoning for poking fun at me).
The next day he came to me and admitted that no matter what the reality of that situation, he’s comfortable in his beliefs and isn’t interested in the subject or knowing more about it at ALL. He also ended up admitting that what I had said the day prior may have been correct and that entertaining the thought of another civilization from another place here was “a bit too much” to dwell on mentally and emotionally for him.
Oak Draiocht:This is absolutly the situation for some people. I’ve seen it first hand. I only spoke of this on a podcast the other day (briefly) that some folks who are very aggressively skeptical on this had some form of experience perhaps in childhood that they don’t want to be real and don’t want to have to challenge the version of reality they have cemented themselves into. And will resent anyone or anything that could potentially shatter that safe yet false reality.

My own experience with it, has been at times mental projections from other people, disguised as ridicule or disparagement. At other times, emotional and psychological reactions to ontological shock, or fear of abuse, again being expressed as ridicule or disparagement.
Its uncanny to see someone trying to cause you pain for speaking your truths, and admitting your reality; when they are in fact full of fear, pain and/or desperation. And yet their reaction is to try to harm you with their own inner demons.
At times i have been there for those people, as at times; all they want themselves, is the truth of what may be going on. But for others, all i can do is enjoy reflecting back their makeshift barbs and tacks; as they naively expect i wont treat them like any other human being would treat them.
I worry for people who struggle with the reality of contact and ETs, but before anyone can help them; they must first help themselves.
