More than a quarter of a century ago, I discovered what I like to call the “Contact Underground.” It is a worldwide network of contact activists that are staging Human Initiated Contact Events (HICE) aka CE-5s. In 1993, after a year of this volunteer effort, I became more open about my “extracurricular activities. I was working at the Panorama City Kaiser ER. Many of the nurses were interested in the subject and some teased me by asking, “Dr. Burkes are you going out to the desert to be abducted this weekend?” Kidding them back I responded with my native Manhattan accent, ” Yous Tiinkk der chasin me? Well lets meezz tellz you somtink, I’m chassin dem!”
My darling wife Yael, as part of the gag, purchased the following certificate for me. The joke was that she wanted to insure for the family’s financial future in case I were “abducted” by aliens and not returned.
Now in my eighth decade of life, I have not done fieldwork in over five years. Younger generations of contact activists are carrying on the tradition of willfully engaging the “Others” that many experiencers call “ET.” Most encouraging is the willingness of some of these contact workers to think outside of the ET hypothesis box. They are seriously considering the radical theories of Dr. Jacques Vallee and John Keel who have pointed to paranormal explanations for the high strangeness aspects of encounters with UAP associated non-human intelligences.
